WHY GLOBAL EDUCATION???
21st century teachers need to understand Global Education and ask why global citizenry should be important to society, and thus part of the American educational system.
What is Global Education?
Today's students literally have the world at their fingertips. Their competency in technology surpasses that of any previous generation- through Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and other forms of social media. The massive scope of the internet brings the world into their homes and access to information is immediate and endless. However, many 21st century students lack a commensurate knowledge base about global issues. Global Education is the essential key to preparing students for their roles in an increasingly global society.
A Guide for Schools
Oxfam International's Education for Global Citizenship: Guide for Schools describes
the context of our 21st century students.
Today, more than ever before, the global is part of our everyday local lives. We are linked to others on every continent:
● socially through the media and telecommunications
● culturally through movements of people
● economically through trade
● environmentally through sharing one planet
● politically through international relations and systems of regulation.
The Global Citizen
Oxfam describes the Global Citizen as someone who:
● is aware of the wider world and has a sense of their own role as a world citizen
● respects and values diversity
● has an understanding of how the world works
● is outraged by social injustice
● participates in the community at a range of levels, from the local to the global
● is willing to act to make the world a more equitable and sustainable place
● takes responsibility for their actions.
"The U.S. Department of Education has established its first-ever, fully articulated international strategy. The strategy is designed to simultaneously advance two strategic goals: strengthening U.S. education and advancing our nation’s international priorities. The strategy reflects the value and necessity of:
- a world-class education for all students;
- global competencies for all students;
- international benchmarking and applying lessons learned from other countries; and
- education diplomacy and engagement with other countries”
