Think globally, Act locally
Many years ago, my husband received a scholarship as a foreign student to attend graduate school. He was funded by QUOTA INTERNATIONAL, a global women's service organization. Today Quota continues to fund various global projects benefiting young people, women and the Deaf community. Its headquarters are in Washington DC, but there are chapters all over the world, with JQ(Junior Quota) clubs for young people to join, so that they too can be part of changing the world through the efforts of their parent organization, Quota International.
Canadian Craig Kielburger was only 12 years old when he recoiled at a news story about Ikbal Masi, a young boy from Pakistan who was the same age as Craig when he was murdered. His tragic death was intended to permanently silence his voice against child labor in the carpet making industry in his country. However, Craig could not accept this and decided to take action, speaking on Ikbal's behalf so with a group of friends he started addressing Ikbal's death publicly, through speeches, letter writing campaigns to his legislators and speaking to civic groups. Today, Craig is no longer a little boy and his life is dedicated to the organization he has led since the age of 12: Free the Children. This organization is now international- building schools, medical clinics, sustainable sources of clean water and food. It is a large organization now, but any school can start an FTC club, just like I did at two schools.
Medical service organizations will often send speakers to visit local schools. Our schools have had speakers from two: Doctors Without Borders and International Organization for Women and Development. Though large in scope, they are made up of medical professionals who donate their free time to oversees work in areas of severe medical need. The little Rwandan girl in the photo above received surgery from IOWD and is happy and healthy today as a result. Students who had the opportunity to meet the IOWD surgeon were captivated with his story and exploring volunteer options as a result.
Teachers looking for organizations to share with their students should not hesitate to look nationally or even internationally as many have local chapters. Examples of this include: the International Red Cross, Operation Smile, Free the Children and the Peace Corps. Most have speakers and materials they can share to help teachers start their own local affiliate.
